When I am Weak, Then I am Strong

Life is not easy. Sometimes we long for sunny skies and shimmering rainbows. But instead, we get droughts and thunderstorms. And when these things come—whether it be in the form of illness, stress, heartache, or hardship—we will often feel weak in our ability to cope. We may feel as if we are at our weakest.

But when we turn to Scripture, we understand that we are called to embrace our human weakness, for it is when we are weak that incomes God’s strength. As God assured Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Let’s consider three points that can help use the strength in being weak.

1. Build Trust

Proverbs 3:5 tells us to “…trust the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” You may not be able to fully understand the reasons, but do place your full trust for your life in Him. It may be hard to do, as you might feel weak, burdened, confused and even resentful. But God will give us the strength and grace to trust Him if we ask for help.

2. Rely on God’s Strength

When we are weak and starting to feel hopeless, and when our own strength runs out, this is the time to turn to God. Paul gives us this example as he struggles with the mysterious “thorn in his side.” As he goes through this time of suffering, he is reminded of God’s grace and power to be sustained through it. This is the same for all of us. Every hurdle we face is a chance to turn to the Lord and ask for His strength and His guidance along the way.

God is with us through the ups and downs of life. He promises to strengthen us and help us (Isaiah 41:10). When we cannot do it on our own, the Lord is there. When we trust Him and rely on Him, he will sustain us with His strength.

3. Delight in Weakness

When Paul realized that God’s grace is sufficient and His power is made perfect in weakness, he decided to boast gladly about his weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest in him (2 Corinthians 12:9). The moment Paul decided to rejoice in his sufferings rather than resent them and try to get rid of them, he received God’s power—and so Paul grew stronger.

Whatever struggles you are facing right now, embrace them and delight in them just like Paul did, for the Lord will give you strength, supply you with grace, and allow you to grow and keep going.

The pain and suffering you feel are real and difficult. But it is nothing compared to the strength God will provide. In Isaiah 66:9, the Lord claims that He will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born.

So, when you go through a difficult time, know that the Lord is providing you with something new and something better than what you had before.
