Why You Should Stop Hardening Your Heart

Your heart, the center of your will and who you are, is one of the warmest yet softest parts of you. It can also become the coldest and stiffest. As we go through the ups and downs of life, our hearts can become hardened by our difficult circumstances. To bring a measure of healing to your heart today, here are three steps to take that are inspired by the truth of the Bible – from God’s heart to yours.

First: Diagnose your heart

There are plenty of reasons why a person’s heart becomes hard in the spiritual sense. It can be heartbreak after heartbreak caused by a failed relationship, a life setback, or other kinds of trials and challenges. A hardened heart can lead to negative consequences in one’s life. First, it can create distance between you and God (see Ephesians 4:18). A heart that is unyielding is also a heart that will not let the Word of God enter in, preventing your knowledge and understanding of God to expand. So what can you do about it, you may ask?

Second: Take the “pill”

Your reading this is no accident. This could very well be God’s way of showing you that you have a heart that’s in need to be revived by Him. God has given us ways to recuperate and mend our hearts to make them alive and well again. Here are verses that may bring some inspiration to your heart: Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me and lead me in the way everlasting!” 1 John:1-9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Third: Take care of your heart

God has commanded us to always guard our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our heart as everything else flows from it.

This is because our mortal lives will always be riddled with things that will cause our hearts to harden. Our hearts are the source of our outlook, the things we say, and the things that we do. Therefore, it can be wise to live a lifestyle of prayer and reading God’s Word to help us stay in tune with who God is and what He is calling us to do and be in the world. God is willing to heal our hardened hearts. It only takes for us to give our heart – in whatever condition it is – to Him. Ezekiel 36:26 shows us what can happen if we give our hearts to the God: He will give us a new heart and a new spirit, then our hearts of stone will be removed and will be replaced with a heart of flesh.
